How to calculate margin on Premier League 1X2 odds
Add home, draw and away implied percentages from one bookmaker's complete football market.
Use all three outcomes
A standard Premier League 1X2 market has home win, draw and away win as separate full-time outcomes. A two-sided margin calculation omits the draw and is wrong for this market. Keep all three prices from the same bookmaker, fixture, settlement period and capture time before doing any arithmetic.
Convert and add
Divide one by each decimal price, then add the three fractions. At home 2.00, draw 3.50 and away 4.00, the implied percentages are 50.00%, 28.57% and 25.00%. Their sum is 103.57% after rounding. The 3.57 percentage points above 100% are the quoted overround for that illustrative market.
Do not confuse margin with a prediction
Overround describes the sum of quoted implied percentages. It does not tell you which outcome will occur or prove a bookmaker's profit on one match. If a draw quote is missing or suspended, mark the market incomplete rather than inventing the third price. Compare bookmaker margins only where each full 1X2 set is available.
Worked example
Illustration: 1/2.00 + 1/3.50 + 1/4.00 = 1.035714, or 103.57% after rounding. The implied-margin excess is 3.57 percentage points. The home, draw and away quotes are an invented complete market.
Illustrative numbers for explaining the calculation. They are not current bookmaker quotes.
Sources and method
The odds are hypothetical. The calculation uses one bookmaker's full-time 1X2 trio and simple implied percentages; it is not a current Premier League bookmaker ranking.
